"Sublime, passionate performances bring opera to life" - By: Gwenda Nemerofsky - Winnipeg Free Press, February 9, 2012
"Dido and Aeneas...leapt to life before our eyes. This matchless ensemble was a joy from beginning to end. It was incredible to find that while each soloist was unique, possessing a timbre, expression and tone all their own, they combined as a chorus into a superbly blended unit. Taylor moved seamlessly from conductor to countertenor soloist..."

Event Title: University of Ottawa Wind Ensemble

|
Thursday, February 16, 2012 - Concert: University of Ottawa Wind Ensemble with Daniel Gress, conductor
Ottawa, February 7, 2012 - The School of Music of the University of Ottawa is pleased to present the next concert featuring the University of Ottawa Wind Ensemble under the direction of Daniel Gress. The concert will take place at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in Room 112 of Tabaret Hall (550 Cumberland Street).
The theme for this concert is "World of Dance" with repertoire including Russian folk dances through the eyes of Dmitri Shostakovich and portrayals of the daily dance-like routine in Philip Sparke's Dawn at Angel's Gate later followed by the relaxed energy of a rustic English country dance and the majesty of a balletic pas de deux in his work Dance Movements. In Chiaroscuro Robert Sheldon explores the effect of Darkness and Light on dance gestures. After a primitive and violent Torch Dance by James Barnes, the Wind Ensemble transforms into an enormous percussion ensemble in Brant Karrick's Mambo Furioso and closes with the frenetic Danza Final, Malambo by Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera. On the program -
James Barnes: Torch Dance
Alberto Ginastera: Danza final from Estancia
Brant Karrick: Mambo Furioso
Robert Sheldon: Chiaroscuro (Symphonic Dances in Shades of Darkness and Light
Dmitri Shostakovich Folk Dances
Philip Sparke: Dance Movements; Sunrise at Angel's Gate
A graduate of the University of Evansville, Daniel Gress was Principal Horn of the National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO) for 25 years and made several tours with the NACO throughout North America, Europe and the Far East. He was a soloist with the NACO on several occasions and was a frequent participant in its Music for a Sunday Afternoon Series performing with some of the world's best known chamber music specialists. Prior to his coming to Ottawa, Mr. Gress was a student of Philip Farkas at Indiana University and was Principal Horn with the NORAD Band in Colorado Springs. He is presently Brass Sector Coordinator and conductor of the Wind Ensemble for the uOttawa School of Music, where he has been teaching since 1977. Mr. Gress was co-host of the Wind Conductors' Symposium held in Ottawa in collaboration with the Ontario Band Association in January 2010, was a Guest Clinician at École secondaire catholique Béatrice-Desloges (Ottawa) in May 2010, and a Guest Conductor for "Music Monday" events held at the University of Guelph-Kemptville.
Admission to this concert is a voluntary contribution at the door.
