Event Title: Music at TabaretMusic at Tabaret
Friday, 5 November 2010
|
Ottawa, October 21, 2010 - The School of Music of the University of Ottawa is pleased to present the next concert of our Music at Tabaret < http://www.music.uottawa.ca/pdf/brochure_music_at_tabaret.pdf> concert series entitled Ysaÿe & His Contemporaries < http://www.music.uottawa.ca/events.html?day=5&month=11&year=2010&type=0&event=22342&method=uo_event&filter=0> featuring violinist David Stewart and Montreal pianist Elise Desjardins. The concert takes place on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. in Tabaret Hall (550 Cumberland Street).
The turn of the 20th century was an era of significant innovation in the world of art and music and a time when Ysaÿe ruled as "King of the Violin". He was also a recognized interpreter of his contemporaries Saint-Saëns and the lesser-known Lekeu. David Stewart will provide enlightening commentary during the evening.
On the program:
LEKEU - Sonata in G major
YSAŸE - Sonata for Solo Violin, Op. 27, No. 4
SAINT-SAËNS - Sonata in D minor, Op. 75
SAINT-SAËNS/YSAŸE - Caprice after the Etude in the Form of a Waltz
SAINT-SAËNS - Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso
David Stewart is Professor of Violin at the University of Ottawa. Born in Chicoutimi, Quebec, he studied with Oscar Shumsky at Yale University and privately with Camilla Wicks. Mr. Stewart was for many years Concertmaster of the Bergen Philharmonic in Norway, appearing often as soloist with that, and other Scandinavian orchestras. He has commissioned and recorded several new works, among them Andrew P. MacDonald's Violin Concerto, for which the composer won a Juno award. David Stewart has toured throughout China several times, performing with orchestra and in recital. This year, on three separate visits to China, he will perform with a Norwegian string orchestra as soloist and conductor, play a series of recitals, and give master classes at a summer festival in Xi'an. Mr. Stewart is co-founder of the Agassiz Chamber Music Festival in Winnipeg, the Norwegian contemporary music ensemble BIT-20 and the Quatuor Lumière, a period instrument quartet performing works of the Classical era.
Pianist Elise Desjardins currently holds a teaching-coach position at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. She has worked extensively over the years with string students at the Conservatoire and during summers at the Domaine Forget Music Academy. Very active on the chamber music scene, she is a partner of many prominent Montreal musicians, including concert master Richard Roberts, oboist Lise Beauchamp, bassoonist Michel Bettez, violist Jutta Puchhammer, and double bassist Ali Yazdanfar. With Jutta Puchhammer she has performed extensively across Canada, the United States and Europe, and the duo released two CDs to rave reviews. In 2007, she toured China with Canadian violinist David Stewart. She is frequently heard performing on Canadian classical radio network. Elise Desjardins holds a master's degree in performance from Indiana School of Music.
Ticket prices are $20 for single tickets; $5 for students (students of the uOttawa School of Music get in free!); and $75 for a season pass to all five concerts in the series. Tickets are available on-line at www.music.uOttawa.ca and at the following locations: The Leading Note (370 Elgin); Compact Music (190 Bank and 785 ½ Bank); Collected Works (1242 Wellington W); School of Music, uOttawa (103 - 610 Cumberland).
Since 1969, the University of Ottawa School of Music has contributed to the musical life of the national capital by presenting concerts by professors and guest artists. Over these forty years, seminal figures of the musical world, such as Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez, have appeared on the Tabaret Hall stage, along with faculty members who pursue national and international careers as performers. The mission of a research university is to enrich the teaching offered to our students by the active and current practice of our disciplines. In that spirit we present the 2010-2011 season of Music at Tabaret.
Upcoming concerts in the Music at Tabaret Series:
- Mystery & Mastery: Bach's Goldberg Variations: Sunday, December 5 at 2 p.m.
- Romantic Icons: Schumann & Chopin: Friday, January 21 at 8 p.m.
- Celebration & Remembrance: Tuesday, March 22 at 8 p.m.
