Event Title: Orchestre symphonique du Conservatoire de musique de Montréal
Sunday, 31 October 2010
The Orchestre symphonique du Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in concert :

Les romantiques at Saint-Brigid's Centre for the Arts in Ottawa

Ottawa, October 25, 2010 - The School of Music of the University of Ottawa, in collaboration with the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, is proud to present the Orchestre symphonique du Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in concert, under the direction of Raffi Armenian. The concert entitled The Romantics will take place on Sunday, October 31 at 3 p.m. at Saint-Brigid's Centre for the Arts in Ottawa (310 St. Patrick Street). This concert is part of a special exchange between the two institutions: the University of Ottawa Orchestra with conductor David Currie will perform in Montreal in February 2011.

Under the baton of Maestro Armenian, the visiting orchestra will perform Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 by the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Still favoured by audiences today, the symphony premiered in St. Petersburg in November 1888 with the composer himself conducting. Philippe Ménard, a conducting student of Raffi Armenian, will take the podium to conduct Schubert's Overture in the Italian Style in D major, D. 590 followed by Brahms's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77 featuring soloist Victor Fournelle-Blain, a student of Johanne Arel.

Throughout his long and distinguished career, Raffi Armenian has been active as conductor, pianist, composer, and teacher. Professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal since 1981, Raffi Armenian also conducts the Symphony Orchestra and was appointed Director of the Conservatoire in June 2008. Equally at home on the operatic podium, Raffi Armenian has frequently been invited to conduct Canada's major orchestras.

General admission is $10 at the door.
